Grain Storage

Store in a cool, dry place. Best kept refrigerated or frozen if not used within 2-3 weeks.

We try to avoid overuse of plastics, especially with our packaging. Our bags are sealed with a zipper and stitched, but we recommend transferring the grain to jars, labeled with the date. Having grain in clear jars in your fridge or freezer also helps you to see what grains to incorporate more into your meals rather than forgotten in the back of the pantry.

If you have visitors in town, 2 cups of grits in the back of your fridge will grow into ~8 cups of grits after cooking…that’s a good way to feed a group…

Southern Summer’s

If you live in the southeastern states, you know about the heat and humidity that wreaks havoc on hair…this applies to grain, too. Be mindful  of freshly milled grain in this climate when deciding where to store.

Keep Refrigerated

Our current labels say ‘keep refrigerated’ because we strongly believe that is the best place for freshly milled grains, not packed with preservatives, to be kept for storing longer than several weeks.

Traveling, Gifts, Etc.

If you purchase our grain as a gift or purchase at a farmer’s market & are traveling, don’t fret. If it’s in the Fall-Spring, the grain should be fine out, for up to a month.

Shipping

We now offer shipping, so if you want to send a gift to a dear one, we can do that & write a gift note from you, too.
